Understanding Facial Aesthetics

Most people know ophthalmologists as vision specialists. What fewer realize is that this same deep expertise in eye anatomy makes our physicians uniquely qualified for facial aesthetic procedures. Oculoplastic surgery, the subspecialty that blends ophthalmic precision with reconstructive and cosmetic technique, addresses both how you look and how well you see.

Our procedures range from quick in-office treatments like Botox and dermal fillers to surgical rejuvenation, including blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, and brow lifts. Whether you want subtle enhancements or meaningful functional improvement, we create personalized plans tailored to your goals and overall eye health.

Risk Profile

Aesthetic and oculoplastic procedures are safe for most healthy adults, but certain factors can affect candidacy and outcomes. During your consultation, we evaluate your overall health, skin quality, medication history, eye function, and aesthetic goals to determine the most appropriate treatment options.

Patients with certain medical conditions, bleeding disorders, dry eye disease, or active skin infections may need to delay or modify their treatment plan. Because we are ophthalmologists first, we can identify and address eye health factors that general aesthetic providers may overlook, ensuring every patient receives care that is both effective and right for their individual health profile.

Your Consultation

A personalized consultation begins with a comprehensive facial analysis to evaluate skin quality, volume loss, muscle movement, eyelid position, and structural changes. For oculoplastic concerns, this also includes an assessment of peripheral vision, because drooping upper eyelids can impair your field of sight before most people realize it.

Using advanced assessment techniques, our specialists map your facial anatomy to design a precise, customized treatment plan. Early evaluation allows us to recommend preventive measures and combination approaches, addressing both functional vision needs and cosmetic goals in a single care relationship.

Concerns We Address

Our specialists address a comprehensive range of concerns, from fine lines and volume loss to drooping eyelids, heavy brows, and skin laxity. We also treat functional eyelid conditions, including ptosis (weakened levator muscles), ectropion (lower lid that falls away from the eye), and entropion (eyelid that rolls inward, causing lashes to rub against the eye surface). Each condition receives a personalized approach combining the right treatments at the right time.

Whether you are beginning to notice early signs of aging or need medically necessary eyelid repair, our team creates tailored plans that may include both surgical and non-surgical options, delivering your most natural, refreshed appearance while preserving and protecting your vision.

Aesthetic FAQs

Are aesthetic procedures safe when performed by ophthalmologists?

Yes, ophthalmologists are among the safest providers for facial aesthetic procedures. Our extensive training in facial anatomy, surgical technique, and eye function provides optimal safety and results. We understand how every treatment affects both appearance and eye health, including potential impacts on dry eye, vision, and eyelid function.

What is oculoplastic surgery, and how is it different from cosmetic surgery?

Oculoplastic surgery is a subspecialty of ophthalmology focused on the eyelids, brow, orbit, and surrounding facial structures. Unlike general cosmetic providers, oculoplastic surgeons are trained first as eye doctors —
which means they evaluate and treat both the functional and aesthetic aspects of eyelid and facial concerns. Procedures like blepharoplasty and ptosis repair can improve vision while also refreshing your appearance.

Is eyelid surgery covered by insurance?

Functional blepharoplasty — when drooping lids impair peripheral vision — is often covered by insurance. Ptosis repair, entropion, and ectropion correction are typically covered when they interfere with normal visual function. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is not covered. We'll help you understand your coverage and provide documentation for functional procedures.

How long do Botox and filler results last?

Botox typically lasts 3–4 months, while dermal fillers can last 9–18 months depending on the product and treatment area. We recommend maintenance treatments to preserve your results and may adjust timing based on your individual response.

What's recovery like for eyelid surgery?

Most patients experience minimal pain with some swelling and bruising that resolves within 2 weeks. You can typically return to work within a week, though you'll need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity initially. Upper lid blepharoplasty can even be performed in-office under local anesthesia; lower lid procedures generally require mild sedation for comfort.

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

During your consultation, we'll evaluate your concerns, examine your facial anatomy and eyelid function, review your eye health history, and discuss your goals to recommend the best approach. We'll explain all options, surgical and non-surgical, and help you make an informed decision
