What is LASIK?
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery used to treat nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness by reshaping the cornea’s curvature. If you have one of these three conditions, you have blurry vision because when light enters your eye through your cornea, it fails to focus clearly on the back of the eye (retina). LASIK restores good eyesight by focusing light clearly on the retina.
An outpatient procedure, LASIK has gained popularity due to its short recovery time and limited postoperative pain. You heal rapidly, reducing the need for prolonged medication and allowing both eyes to be treated at the same time. Most people experience about 12 hours of mild irritation after LASIK, similar to the feeling of dirty contact lenses. One dose of Tylenol is typically all most people need. Most patients return to work within 48 hours.
Horizon Eye Care began performing corneal refractive surgery in 1985, followed by Laser Vision Correction in 1993 and LASIK in 1997. We offer you exceptional care and results with our fully equipped LASIK center, dedicated solely to performing this procedure.
Are you a good candidate for LASIK?
If you wear glasses or contacts, you could be a candidate for LASIK. Horizon Eye Care offers free initial LASIK screenings and consultations. A LASIK screening consists of a thorough examination and testing of your eyes to ensure that LASIK is right for you. See our LASIK FAQs for more details.
If your doctor determines you are not a candidate for LASIK, you may be more suited for PRK. Learn more about PRK.
Tests to determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK include:
- Dry eye testing
- Detailed refraction
- An assessment of your vision
- Measurement of your pupil size in low and medium light, corneal topography (shape) and corneal thickness
- A comprehensive eye exam
Once the pre-operative testing is complete, you and your LASIK doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure. Your doctor will answer any questions that you have. Your Horizon Eye Care specialist will walk you through the procedure step by step and review important postoperative instructions.
Following your LASIK procedure, you will receive a topical steroid to make you more comfortable and an antibiotic to prevent infection. Any additional medications may be provided on an individual basis.
