Why Early Exams Matter

Children’s vision problems often have no obvious symptoms, yet early detection is critical. Many conditions must be treated before age 7–8, when the brain’s visual pathways become fixed, after which treatment becomes far less effective.

A child’s brain develops rapidly, making it essential to identify vision problems in the first months of life. Early comprehensive exams establish a baseline and track changes over time, giving your child the best possible foundation for learning and development.

Conditions We Treat

We diagnose and treat refractive errors, amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed or wandering eyes), pediatric cataracts, blocked tear ducts, ptosis (drooping eyelids), and other congenital conditions in children of all ages.

Each condition has a critical treatment window. Amblyopia, for example, is most successfully treated before age 7. Our fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologists specialize in catching and treating these conditions during the periods when intervention works best.

What to Expect

Our pediatric specialists use age-appropriate examination techniques for every stage — from toys and lights for infants, to matching games for preschoolers, to traditional chart testing for school-age children — in a welcoming, kid-friendly environment.

We understand children may feel anxious about comprehensive eye exams. Our team creates a comfortable, positive experience and communicates every step to both the child and parents. Routine pediatric exams typically take 60–90 minutes including dilation time.

Treatment Options

From durable prescription glasses designed for active kids to patching therapy for lazy eye and surgical options when needed, we offer the full range of pediatric eye care, all coordinated under one roof with fellowship-trained specialists.

We carry kid-friendly frame brands like Miraflex and DilliDalli, and fun Ortopad eye patches that make amblyopia treatment more enjoyable. When surgery is needed, our pediatric ophthalmologists perform procedures as comfortable outpatient visits.

Pediatric FAQs

When should my child have their first eye exam?

There's no single set age because it depends on your child's specific needs and risk factors. Many children benefit from a baseline exam early even without symptoms. Our pediatric specialists can provide guidance based on your child's development and any concerns you may have.

Do you accept insurance for pediatric eye care?

We participate in most medical insurance plans in North and South Carolina. Medical conditions are typically covered by medical insurance, while routine eye care may be covered by separate vision insurance plans. We accept VSP, most EyeMed plans, Community Eye Care, and participating BCBS discount plans.

How long will my child's eye exam take?

Routine pediatric eye exams typically last 60–90 minutes. This allows our specialists sufficient time to thoroughly examine your child's eyes in a comfortable, stress-free environment designed to put children at ease throughout the visit.

What should I watch for between eye exams?

Watch for squinting, sitting close to the TV, covering one eye, difficulty reading, complaints of headaches, or declining school performance. However, many serious pediatric eye conditions develop without obvious symptoms, making regular exams essential.
