Aesthetic Center at Horizon Eye Care

Though aesthetic procedures such as BOTOX® or Dermal Fillers are not always associated with ophthalmologists, why wouldn’t you trust the eye experts with the areas around your eyes? In fact, ophthalmologists were the first doctors to perform Botox injections. Further, the eyelids, sockets, brow and under-eye areas require their expertise.

This product has both medical and cosmetic indications. It is primarily used to focus on areas of concern on the top portion of your face, such as deep-set creases between the brows (mid-glabellar), forehead lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet). Treatment areas are customized to each patient and are encouraged to be maintained every four months.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved treatment to help smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in adults. The #1 selling product of its kind, BOTOX® is commonly injected into frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. The result – a younger looking version of yourself.
Moderate to Severe Frown Lines: Frown lines appear between your eyebrows as a result of concentrating and frowning over the years. To temporarily diminish their prominence, a provider will inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into these lines and other muscles on the face to prevent them from contracting. Moderate to Severe Crow’s Feet: Squinting, smiling and laughing combine to create crow’s feet in the corner of our eyes. Though these are primarily positive movements, crow’s feet add years to our appearance. A provider will inject the muscles associated with crow’s feet to temporarily make you look better. Moderate to Severe Forehead Lines: When you raise your eyebrows, the muscles on your forehead contract, causing skin to furrow and fold and permanent wrinkles to set in. Your provider will inject these muscles to help make forehead lines temporarily look better or disappear altogether.
After your injection, you may notice the disappearance of lines and wrinkles within 7 to 10 days. Typically, results will fully show up after two weeks. These results last up to four months for adults who have moderate to severe frown lines.

Dermal Fillers

Primarily used for deep set creases running from the nose to the corner of the mouth and used for fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Dermal filler can also be used to increase volume in the lips. Results typically last between 9-18 months.

Dermal Fillers FAQ

Dermal fillers help restore volume and fullness to the face and lips, diminishing facial lines and wrinkles. In doing so, fillers give the recipient a more youthful appearance. As we age, we lose subcutaneous fat in our face. Subsequently, the facial muscles begin working closer to the skin surface and smile lines and crow’s feet become more visible. At the same time, the facial skin stretches a bit, adding to the loss of facial volume. Other factors, including sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle, may also affect the overall appearance of skin.
At Horizon, we use Hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a gooey substance that is naturally produced by our body. It delivers nutrients that not only helps plump the skin but retain moisture and softness as well.
  • Enhance shallow contours in the cheeks and temples
  • Decrease or even remove the shadow cast by lower lids
  • Reconstruct contour deformities in the face
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles around the eyes, nose, lips and cheeks
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars
  • Add volume to thin lips
With optimal treatment and based on the formula used, results may last from one to two years.

Eyelid Surgery

If you believe that your eyes are making you look tired, sad or older than you really feel, eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty) may be the right choice for you. Eyelid surgery can remove the excess fat and drooping skin of the upper eyelids, minimize bags under the eyes and tighten the lower eyelid skin. The result is a more alert and rested appearance. This outpatient procedure is generally done in the office.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

Blepharoplasty, the most common eyelid surgery in the United States, is performed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. There are two types of blepharoplasty surgeries – aesthetic and reconstructive. While many people opt to improve their appearance, others need reconstructive blepharoplasties to help correct conditions that impair normal vision.
If a patient needs reconstructive blepharoplasty to correct vision impairment, the surgery is often covered by insurance. However, if the patient has elected to have the surgery for aesthetic improvement, it is not.
Other common types of eyelid surgery correct malpositions of the eyelids such as ptosis, entropion and ectropion. These conditions almost always interfere with normal visual function and therefore should be partially or fully covered by your insurance provider. Ptosis: Ptosis, or droopy eyelid, is caused by a weakness in one or both of the upper eyelid muscles. This can occur as a result of aging, previous eye surgery, neurological disease or diabetes. It may also be present at birth. Entropion: Entropion is a condition that primarily affects the lower eyelid, causing it to turn inward so that the eyelashes rub against the eyeball. Ectropion: Alternately, ectropion causes the eyelid to turn outward, exposing the inner surface and creating irritation.
  • Prior to undergoing eyelid surgery, an eye exam should be performed
  • Trust the experts – an ophthalmologist with advanced training in oculoplastic surgery is uniquely qualified to both perform the surgery and address the effects of the surgery on the eyeball itself
  • Eyelid surgery is performed in a physician’s office or in an outpatient surgery center, and may take between 45 and 90 minutes Surgical outcome depends on skin structure and the healing process
  • Postoperative pain is usually minimal and ice compresses are used to reduce swelling

Brow/Forehead Lift

A brow lift, also commonly called a forehead lift, rejuvenates the face above the eyes to restore a more refreshed appearance that better reflects a patient’s natural vibrancy. By removing excess sagging, skin on the forehead and repositioning the underlying muscles and tissues, a brow lift can correct a heavy, sagging brow, eliminate deep furrows, and restore a smoother, more youthful contour to the upper one-third of the face.

Brow Lift FAQ

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, helps rejuvenate your face and gives you a refreshed appearance. During a brow lift, the surgeon may remove excess sagging or skin on the forehead as well as reposition underlying muscles and tissues. The goal: to correct a sagging brow, eliminate deep furrows and give a smoother, more youthful contour.
Based on your anatomy and desired results, your physician will choose the best surgical technique. While the classic brow lift is no longer as popular, your oculoplastic surgeon will likely choose between one of these less invasive options: Endoscopic Brow Lift: More and more, cosmetic surgeons are performing this minimally invasive procedure to achieve optimal results. Endoscopic brow lifts comprise of short incisions (about 3/4" in length) just beyond the hairline followed by the repositioning of muscles and lifting of tissues along with the removal of excess fat and tissue. Temporal or Limited Incision Brow Lift: This procedure is most commonly performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery. Through one-inch incisions above each temple, the surgeon lifts and repositions the tissues of the outer brow area. Then, through incisions made for upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon smooths frown lines.
There is little pain associated with a brow lift, though it is common for patients to feel slightly uncomfortable due to a tightness in the forehead. Swelling and bruising may occur but typically disappear after two weeks.
When performed by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon, your results will last for years. Remember, though, that nothing can stop the normal aging process. Eventually, your forehead tissues will settle. To keep up your appearance, wear sunscreen every day, eat a healthy diet and avoid smoking.
