Understanding Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are FDA-regulated medical devices that require proper professional evaluation, fitting, and ongoing care. Your eye’s unique shape, tear film, lifestyle, and vision needs all influence which lens will give you the best comfort, vision, and long-term safety.

Today’s advanced materials and designs offer solutions for virtually every vision need—from dry eyes and astigmatism to presbyopia and irregular corneas. With the right professional guidance, most people can successfully wear contact lenses comfortably and safely.

Candidacy & Safety

Most people are good candidates for contact lenses, but certain conditions require careful consideration. Severe dry eye, certain corneal conditions, or a history of recurring eye infections may affect lens choice or require specialty lens options rather than standard soft lenses.

Poor hygiene habits, sleeping in lenses, or wearing lenses beyond their replacement schedule significantly increase the risk of serious complications. Our team provides thorough education on safe wear and care to help every patient maintain healthy eyes while enjoying the freedom of contacts.

Glaucoma Detection

A comprehensive contact lens evaluation goes beyond a standard glasses prescription. We measure your corneal curvature, pupil size, and tear film quality to select the lens that fits your eye’s unique shape precisely. Trial lenses allow us to assess vision and comfort before finalizing your prescription.

Follow-up visits confirm that your lenses are fitting well and that your corneas remain healthy. We monitor for early signs of complications and adjust your lens type or wearing schedule as needed to ensure safe, comfortable wear throughout the year.

Types We Offer

Our practice offers the full spectrum of contact lens options, from daily disposables and extended wear soft lenses to rigid gas permeable and specialty lenses for complex prescriptions or irregular corneas. We carry top brands and have access to custom lens options when standard designs aren’t sufficient.

Whether you’re a first-time wearer or an experienced contact lens patient looking for better options, our team will find the right lens for your eyes, budget, and lifestyle. Replacement lenses can be ordered conveniently through our secure online store at horizoneye.myeyestore.com.

Contact Lenses FAQs

How do I know if I'm a good candidate for contact lenses?

Most people can successfully wear contact lenses. Even if you have astigmatism, dry eyes, or need reading correction, modern contact lens designs provide excellent vision and comfort. Our comprehensive eye evaluation will determine the best options for your specific needs.

Are daily disposable lenses worth the extra cost?

For most patients, yes. When you factor in the cost of cleaning solutions, the reduced risk of complications, and improved comfort, daily contact lenses often provide better overall value. Plus, they're more convenient and hygienic.

How long does it take to adjust to contact lenses?

Daily soft lenses typically have minimal adjustment time and most patients are comfortable within the first day. RGP lenses require 1–2 weeks for full adaptation. We'll provide a wearing schedule to help you adjust gradually.

Can I sleep in my contact lenses?

We strongly recommend removing all contact lenses before sleep, even those FDA-approved for overnight wear. Sleeping in lenses dramatically increases your risk of serious eye infections that can threaten your vision.

What should I do if my contact lens gets stuck in my eye?

Don't panic. First, add rewetting drops and gently massage your eyelid. If the lens doesn't move, call our office immediately at (704) 365-0555. Never try to force a stuck lens out, as this can damage your eye.

How often should I replace my contact lens case?

Replace your contact lens case every 3 months, or immediately if it becomes cracked or contaminated. Always use fresh solution — never top off old solution in your case.
