Understanding Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when your tears evaporate too quickly. A healthy tear film has three layers, including oil, water, and mucus, and a problem with any layer can lead to dry eye symptoms including burning, stinging, grittiness, and blurred vision.

Dry eye is one of the most common eye conditions, affecting millions of Americans. Symptoms often worsen with screen time, air travel, dry climates, or air conditioning. While discomfort is the most common complaint, untreated severe dry eye can damage the corneal surface over time.

Risk Profile

Dry eye is more common after age 50 and affects women more than men, particularly after menopause. Other risk factors include prolonged screen use, contact lens wear, certain medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure drugs), prior refractive eye surgery, and autoimmune conditions like Sjogren’s syndrome.

Environmental factors including low humidity, wind, and smoke exposure also contribute to dry eye symptoms. Patients who sleep with their eyes partially open, wear contact lenses for extended periods, or live in dry climates are at elevated risk and may benefit from preventive treatment.

Dry Eye Detection

Diagnosing dry eye involves more than a standard eye exam. We evaluate tear production with Schirmer testing, assess tear film stability and evaporation rate, examine the Meibomian glands with specialized imaging, and look for signs of corneal and conjunctival damage from chronic dryness.

Identifying whether you have aqueous deficiency dry eye, evaporative dry eye from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or a combination of both is essential for effective treatment. Each type responds to different therapies, and treating the wrong type can delay relief and allow the condition to progress.

Types We Treat

Aqueous Deficiency Dry Eye occurs when the lacrimal glands cannot produce enough of the watery tear component. This type is treated with anti-inflammatory medications and may require punctal plugs to keep existing tears on the eye surface longer.

Evaporative Dry Eye is the most common form, affecting 86% of dry eye cases, and is caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Your body produces tears, but they evaporate too quickly due to insufficient or poor-quality oil from blocked eyelid glands, requiring treatments to restore gland function.

Dry Eye FAQs

How do I know if I have dry eye syndrome?

Common symptoms include burning, stinging, grittiness, excessive tearing, blurred vision, and eye fatigue. These symptoms often worsen throughout the day or in dry environments. A comprehensive eye exam can determine if you have dry eye and identify the specific type and underlying causes.

Can dry eyes be cured?

While there is no permanent cure, dry eye can be effectively managed with proper treatment. Many patients experience significant symptom relief and improved quality of life with appropriate therapy. The key is identifying the underlying cause and developing a personalized treatment plan.

How long does dry eye treatment take to work?

Artificial tears provide immediate but temporary relief. Prescription medications typically take 6–12 weeks to show full effects. Advanced procedures like LipiFlow can provide improvement lasting up to 12 months. Most patients need ongoing management rather than a one-time treatment.

Is dry eye dangerous to my vision?

Mild to moderate dry eye is primarily uncomfortable but not vision-threatening. However, severe untreated dry eye can lead to corneal scarring or thinning over time. Early treatment prevents complications and helps maintain long-term eye health.

Why do my eyes tear if they're dry?

Excessive tearing is often a symptom of dry eye. When your eyes are irritated by dryness, they produce reflex tears as a protective mechanism. However, these reflex tears are watery and lack the proper oil content to effectively lubricate your eyes.
