Drs. Gaskin, Hustead and Marvin Announce Retirement

Drs. Gaskin, Hustead and Marvin Boast Years of Service

Dr. Gaskin, who has practiced for 38 years, has also served as team ophthalmologist for the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets. His past positions also include Chief of Ophthalmology for Carolinas Medical Center and for Presbyterian Hospital and chairman of the board for Prevent Blindness North Carolina. Dr. Gaskin has also donated his time raising funds for Charlotte’s Discovery Place science museum and for local hospital capital fund campaigns as well as being involved in several nonprofit organizations, including Prevent Blindness NC. His last day or practice will be December 31, 2021.

A Harvard University graduate in biology, Dr. Hustead has been practicing ophthalmology since 1989. She was a part of the original Charlotte Eye Associates, one of the practices that formed Horizon Eye Care, since 1991. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has served as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. Her works have been published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Archives of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hustead and her husband, Dr. Paul Marvin, are both retiring on December 21, 2021.

Dr. Marvin, who joined Horizon Eye Care from Charlotte Eye Associates in 1991 with Dr. Hustead, has also been practicing since 1989. He began his career on staff at the University of Miami’s world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute after graduating summa cum laude from the Michigan College of Optometry. Dr. Marvin is a current or past member of several professional associations, including the Barnes-Hind Contact Lens Formulation Committee. He is a recipient of the Ave Custos Oculi Award for outstanding contact lens studies.

Options for Patients

Dr. Gaskin will see patients through December 30 and is referring patients with appointments after that day to the other capable Horizon Eye Care doctors. Dr. Jonathan Minkowski has already joined the Horizon staff in anticipation of Dr. Gaskin’s retirement.

Dr. Hustead and Dr. Marvin are seeing patients until December 21. For their patients with appointments after that date, in addition to the other find Horizon Eye Care doctors, Dr. Joel Kaluzny, who joined Horizon due to their impending retirement, is now seeing patients at Waverly and Cotswold.
