Joseph M. Biber, MD

Education: After graduating summa cum laude from Presbyterian College, Dr. Biber obtained a medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. After completing medical school, Dr. Biber stayed at MUSC for his internship through the Department of Surgery. This was followed by his ophthalmology residency at the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, SC where he was awarded the prestigious Program Director's Award, given to the top resident that most embodies the personal traits one would most want in his or her physician. Dr. Biber was also presented the Helma Research Award for his work on intraocular lens design and formation of after-cataract. His education was further defined by a Cornea and External Disease fellowship at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Professional Highlights: Dr. Biber has participated in multiple research projects including the preparation of a review of LASIK safety and outcomes, which was presented in part to the FDA. He also helped establish the "Fight for S.I.G.H.T." program, which provides free comprehensive ophthalmic eye exams to the underserved population of Charleston, SC. Dr. Biber has published multiple research papers in the leading ophthalmology journals and has presented at several national and international meetings. Dr. Biber has also authored several book chapters describing the medical and surgical management of corneal diseases. Dr. Biber maintains a membership with several societies including the Paton Corneal Society of the Eye Bank Association of America and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Special Interests: Dr. Biber's primary interests are cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, laser vision corrections (LASIK), partial and full thickness full corneal transplantation, and management of corneal diseases.

Personal Background: Dr. Biber and his wife, Elizabeth, have two children.  Dr. Biber enjoys spending time with his family, running and playing golf.
