Education: A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Ugland initiated his medical education at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He next completed his internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, followed by his ophthalmology residency at Emory University in Atlanta, where he served as chief resident. In addition, he completed a Cornea-External Disease fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. He has been in practice in Charlotte since 1985.
Professional Highlights: Dr. Ugland has the distinction of being Medical Director for the Eye Bank of Life Share of the Carolinas, an organ procurement agency dedicated to restoring vision through corneal transplantation. Dr. Ugland maintains a membership with several local, state and national societies including the Paton Corneal Society of the Eye Bank Association of American and the American Society of Cataract/Refractive Surgery. He also serves as team ophthalmologist and LASIK surgeon for Charlotte's NFL football team, the Carolina Panthers.
Special Interests: Dr. Ugland's primary interest is refractive surgery (LASIK). He was selected as a clinical investigator for the FDA trials (1992 - 1996), which led to the approval of laser vision correction. His other interests include corneal transplant and cataract surgery.
Personal Background: A native Texan, Dr. Ugland and his wife, Lisa, have three children, Leslie Ann, Jennifer and Eric.
