David L. Smith, MD

Education: Upon completing his undergraduate degree at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Dr. Smith attended medical school at Emory University in Atlanta. This was followed by an internship at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, an ophthalmology residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington D.C., and a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Professional Highlights: During his 20 years in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Smith held various positions, including chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., from 1984 to 1987. From 1988 until 1993, he served as Head of the Glaucoma Service at Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he trained ophthalmology residents, conducted clinical research and treated various dignitaries including many members of Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court and President George Bush. During this tour, he was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the military medical school in Maryland, this Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He was also an active member of the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology, which trains and certifies ophthalmic technicians. Dr. Smith served as President of the Charlotte Ophthalmology Society from 1995-1997.

Special Interests: Dr. Smith primarily focuses on general ophthalmology, with a strong emphasis on glaucoma and cataracts.

Personal Background: Originally from Georgia, Dr. Smith and his wife have four children.
