Astigmatism, a common eye condition, can affect both near and distance vision, causing objects to look blurry and out of focus. Astigmatism can be mild, not requiring any treatment, or moderate to severe, causing a patient to need treatment options ranging from eyeglasses to laser vision correction surgery.
At Horizon Eye Care, Charlotte, North Carolina's astigmatism eye specialsts, we will take the time to discuss your situation and concerns to find the right treatment for your individual eyesight needs. To get started, please schedule an astigmatism consultation with our experienced staff today.
Causes of Astigmatism
Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. A “normal” cornea is sphere-shaped, like a basketball. A cornea with astigmatism is oblong-shaped, much like a football. That oblong curvature prevents the lens from focusing light rays accurately. And that is what leads to the blurry vision.
Astigmatism is usually hereditary and present at birth. But the condition can also develop after an eye injury or from eye disease.
Symptoms of Astigmatism
Often diagnosed in patients who also have nearsightedness of farsightedness, astigmatism can cause:
Distorted vision of both close-up and far-away objects
Headaches
Eyestrain and discomfort in the eye, especially after reading
Squinting
Tilting head to one side to improve vision
