Altitude and Cataracts

Several research studies have been conducted in recent years regarding the relationship between high altitude and the development of cataracts (a condition that causes a clouding of the lens of the eye).

Here are some of the cataract and altitude research findings summarized for brevity here:

  • A study of lifelong residents of Nepal showed that the prevalence of cataracts increased along with altitude, as long as the altitude was accompanied by an average of 12 hours of sunlight exposure. (Some mountain communities were blocked from intense sunlight during the day because of neighboring mountains.)
  • One study of a high-altitude community near Tibet found that the “natural stress” of low barometric pressure, low oxygen concentration, low humidity and intense sunshine combined to increase the risk of cataract development in otherwise healthy adults. Even younger adults, under the age of 40, were at higher risk of cataract development.
  • A University of Iceland study found that commercial airline pilots have a three-fold increase in cataracts compared to non-pilots because of elements of the high altitude occupation.

In addition to following the guidelines of routine eye care, the World Health Organization also recommends wearing strong sunglasses to filter UV light when at high altitudes for long periods of time.
