Eye Disease: Are You at risk?
 
  The best way to prevent eye disease is to have regular eye examinations. Below are some risk factors for the most common eye diseases. If you fall into one of these categories, it is extremely important that you keep up with your routine eye checks. 

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)  

Age is the greatest risk factor for this disease, but there are other risk factors:
  • Tobacco use
  • Being a white female
  • Having a history of ARMD

Cataracts  

Cataracts can develop at any age, but if you are 60 years old and above, your risk is much higher. Be sure to have an eye exam through dilated pupils at least every two years.

Diabetic Eye Disease  

If you have diabetes you are at a higher risk for eye diseases, including:
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts

Glaucoma  

Glaucoma can develop at any age but higher risk groups include those who:
  • Are African American and over the age of 40
  • Are over age 60
  • Have a family history of glaucoma
