Restylane Q&A

Charlotte, North Carolina

What does Restylane® contain?

Restylane is a non-animal-based injectable filler which uses hyaluronic acid. There is no need for any allergy test before your treatment. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in the human body, although as we age, less is produced. This reduced production is one of the contributing causes of skin dryness, and wrinkles and lines.

Hyaluronic acid is “water-loving”. It draws water to itself and binds with it. That makes the skin plump up and look smoother and younger where the Restylane has been injected. Over time, each hyaluronic acid molecule binds with more water, which extends the Restylane results.

How is Restylane different from other injectable fillers?

Not all injectable fillers use hyaluronic acid. Of those that do, some use a bovine-derived collagen and some use rooster-derived hyaluronic acid. This creates a risk of allergic reaction to the animal proteins and even potential disease transmission. Restylane uses non-animal hyaluronic acid, which eliminates any such risks.

Is Restylane different from Botox?

Yes. It works in a completely different way. Botox is not a dermal filler, although it is injected. It works by temporarily paralyzing a specific muscle. Most often it’s used for frown lines, smoothing out the forehead by preventing the frown muscle from contracting. Restylane does none of that. It simply places hyaluronic acid beneath the skin surface, to attract water and plump up the skin in that area.

How long do Restylane results last?

On average, results lasts about six months and possibly longer. It partly depends on your age, skin type, and lifestyle. You can maintain the results better if you go for another treatment before the first results have entirely worn off.

Is Restylane safe?

Yes. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons worldwide have been using it since 1996. The most common side effect is some temporary swelling and redness at the injection site. It wears off in a couple of days.

How long do treatments take?

That depends on how extensive your treatment is. It could be ten minutes or an hour or so. Generally it is quick enough that people come for Restylane treatments on their lunch hour, and go right back to work.
