Juvederm™ is an injectable filler which gives smooth and
attractive results. The FDA-approved it in 2006 for treating moderate to severe
wrinkles and folds on the face, including those nasolabial folds which develop
between the nose and corners of the mouth.
How does Juvederm
Work?
Juvederm uses hyaluronic acid in a water-based gel. The body
naturally produces hyaluronic acid, which means that Juvederm is biocompatible
and no allergy test is needed. As we age, the body produces less hyaluronic
acid, which is one of the contributing causes of skin dryness, lines and
wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid attracts water, so that the skin becomes more supple
and smooth where Juvederm is injected.
Skin Layers
The skin has three main layers and each has several sub-layers.
- The top, visible layer (epidermis) is tough for protection, and contains dead cells which are being discarded
- The middle layer is the dermis, where many structures reside: sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, nerves, blood vessels, and the collagen-elastin matrix which supports the skin
- The third layer (subcutaneous layer) has fat for body insulation and more blood vessels
Types of Juvederm
Juvederm is injected into the dermis. It comes in three different formulas which are injected to varying depths in the dermis to treat different types of facial lines:
- Juvederm 18 – a relatively fluid gel which is injected into the upper dermis to treat crows feet and other fine lines
- Juvederm 24 – a thicker gel injected into the mid-dermis to treat moderate wrinkles such as on the forehead
- Juvederm 30 – the thickest gel injected into the deep dermis to treat skin folds and grooves such as the nasolabial folds. It can also augment the lip volume and plump up the cheeks.
A Juvederm treatment seldom gives any side effects. Sometimes there is some redness or sensitivity at the injection site, but it will subside in a few days. There may be some skin discoloration, but it can be treated. Occasionally there is some firmness, bruising, or swelling, but again, these will subside in days.
