Although we are a fully-equipped and fully-qualified LASIK center, we offer other ophthalmic services as well. We treat a variety of eye diseases which not every LASIK surgeon treats. If you are having problems with your eyes or vision, or both, and would like to have your eyes closely examined, we can help.
Our philosophy places a high priority on patient education. We hope this website is useful in helping you to learn more about ophthalmic procedures you might be considering. Below are some links to pages on eye diseases and how we can treat them.
People tend to take their eyes for granted, as long as they're functioning pretty well, and we can see our way around for daily activities and employment. Some eye diseases are sly though, and creep up on a person. They need to be diagnosed early so as to prevent encroaching loss of sight.
Glaucoma is such a disease. It gives no early symptoms, so most people are completely unaware of having it. Gradually it will reduce your visual field, stealing away small pieces of peripheral vision until you finally notice it. By then, some vision is lost and can’t be restored. We urge everyone over the age of about 40 years to come for annual glaucoma checks, especially if you have family members with glaucoma.
Age-Related Macular Degenation (ARMD) is another sly disease which slowly robs you of your vision. Rather than taking peripheral vision, it takes central vision. Please come for a check-up as soon as you can.
Dry Eye Syndrome is much more noticeable than glaucoma or ARMD. It gives you stinging eyes, redness and a gritty feeling that you can’t miss.
Uveitis is another eye disease which can cause blindness. It is an infection of the middle layer of tissue surrounding the eye.
Perhaps a better-known condition is conjunctivitis, an infection of the conjunctiva, the outside membrane around the eye. You will notice the itching, redness and discharge. Do not wait to have it treated.
Two surgeries we offer are:
* Cataract surgery, where the natural lens is removed and replaced with an implantable lens known as an intraocular lens (IOL)
* Corneal transplants, where the entire front clear part of the eye, the cornea, is replaced by a healthy donor cornea
Please contact our Charlotte, North Carolina office if you would like to have your eyes checked for any of these damaging eye diseases. The sooner they are detected, the sooner you can have them treated, and the less trouble you will have down the road. We hope to hear from you soon.
