For those who are interested in correcting their presbyopia, an option that can help you lessen your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Lens replacement surgery with correcting lens implants can help you see objects at a distance and up close. These implanted lenses are known as intraocular lenses (IOLS).
There are currently 3 different lens options to assist in correcting presbyopia: ReSTOR®, ReZoom™ or Crystalens®. These IOLs can also offer cataract patients the ability to become less dependent or even free of eyeglasses following cataract surgery. The IOL Procedure
Lens Replacement Surgery is the same procedure which is performed in cataract surgery. For both cataracts and presbyopia, there is no way to correct these problems surgically without removing the natural lens. Your surgeon will first numb the eye with eye drops. He or she will then make a very tiny incision at the outer edge of the cornea through which a microscopic instrument can be inserted.
The natural crystalline lens will be gently broken up with an ultrasound probe and removed using suction. The IOL will then be placed in your eye through the same incision.
Each of the below implantable lenses uses a slightly different optical design to help you achieve your goal of clear vision at various distances. You and your surgeon will determine which is best for you.
ReSTOR®
This permanent artificial lens has an apodized diffractive optic design that gives it the ability to focus light correctly on the retina. This allows you to view images at various distances without mechanical movement of a lens. This design improves image quality while minimizing visual disturbances, resulting in an increased range of vision quality.
ReSTOR® is ideal for adult patients with and without presbyopia, who desire near and distance vision with increased independence from glasses and contact lenses.
Crystalens®
This is a single-focus accommodating IOL, designed to address the loss of intermediate and near-focusing ability. Crystalens works naturally with your eyes' muscles—moving to give you improved vision for the activities like computer, reading, and all distance activities.
ReZoom™
A ReZoom IOL creates multiple focal points so patients can see at a variety of distances: near, mid-distance, and far. This IOL has proportioned zones to provide for good vision in a range of light conditions.
