Are You a Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

Charlotte, North Carolina

LASIK Surgery

To determine whether LASIK is right for you, you should undergo a complimentary evaluation with your Horizon Eye Care surgeon. You will have the opportunity to meet with your surgeon and ask any questions you may have. The evaluation can confirm that your degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism is within the proper range. It will also ensure that your eyes are healthy. Typically, a good LASIK candidate is someone who meets the criteria below:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have healthy eyes, other than refractive error -- myopia (nearsighted), hyperopia (farsighted) or astigmatism
  • Have a stable prescription

LASIK TREATMENT MAY NOT BE ADVISABLE ON PERSONS:

  • With uncontrolled vascular disease
  • With autoimmune disease
  • Who are immune compromised or on drugs or therapy that suppress the immune system
  • With keratoconus (irregular steepening of the cornea)
  • With a history of keloid formation (abnormally thick and prominent scars)
  • Who are pregnant, nursing, or expecting to become pregnant within the six months following the LASIK procedure
  • With residual, recurrent, or active ocular disease (such as Herpes, corneal scars, infections, etc.)
  • With active or residual diseases likely to affect wound-healing capability
  • With unstable myopia (nearsighted), hyperopia (farsighted) or astigmatism
  • With amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • With glaucoma

If you know that you have any of these conditions, you should inform your physician. They will discuss with you the particular circumstances of your situation, including the indications for treatment, your risks, and your alternatives.
