Frame Shapes

Your frames say a lot about you. Eyeglass frames improve your appearance, enhance your features and express your personal style.

Eyeglasses best suited for business or formal wear may not be appropriate for casual and active wear. Various wardrobe selections -- for work, sports or leisure -- require complementary choices in frames and lenses.

Your sports glasses must be different than the glasses you wear to a formal party, as well as the glasses you wear when working on a computer, relaxing at home, reading or watching TV. Discuss your lifestyle and activities with your Horizon eye care professional for the best advice in selecting your frames.

What Our Doctors Recommend
The width of your face, eyebrow line, pupil alignment, frame position, frame shape, hinges and nosepads are equally important in the selection of proper eyeglasses and sunglasses.

Horizon Eye Care's attention to frame details ensure that your glasses last longer, provide the best visual acuity through proper alignment, and reduce the need for mechanical frame adjustments.

Here are some factors to consider in your choice of frames:

Square Face
Slightly rounded or curved frames best complement a square face. The top of the frame should sit high enough on the face to downplay the line of the jaw.

Oblong Face
The oblong face is similar to the square in that the chin is almost as wide as the cheeks, but the oblong face is longer and narrower. Rounded and curved frame styles are best, but to help reduce the length of the face, the frames should have a definite vertical dimension to help cover as much of the center of the face as possible.

Oval Face
This is the most common face type, and most frame shapes look good on an oval face. The width of the frame should be as wide as the widest part of the face.

Round Face
Frames with straight or angular lines work best on a round face. It is particularly important that the width of the frame is the same as the width of the face. Frames that are too small for the face will only make the face look rounder. Select deep frame colors help to minimize fullness in the face. Round faces do not handle light pastels well.

Triangular Face
A triangular face has a broad forehead and a narrow mouth and chin. The best frame is one that helps to broaden the narrow bottom portion of the face. The shape of choice includes a thin rim and some vertical lines to balance the bottom part of the face. To help reduce focus on the wide, upper part of the face, you should make sure your eyes are centered in the frame. We recommend avoiding large frames and frames that sit high on the face.

The Nose & Other Features to Keep in Mind:

Long Nose: Select frames with a low-set bridge. Frames with a double bridge can also help a nose appear shorter.

Short Nose: Select frames with a high-set bridge. The lines should be clear and not cover up facial features.

Large Nose: Select a relatively large frame for balance. A small frame will only accentuate the nose.

Small Nose: To help the nose appear larger or longer to be in better proportion, go with light-colored frames with a high bridge.

Close-Set Eyes: Choose frames with a simple bridge color and dramatic temple color.

Size of Frames: Your eye should be in the center of the frame. If you select frames that are too large for your face, you may experience visual distortion or glare; if too small, you may limit your peripheral vision.

Tips for judging correct frame size:

Your pupil should be in the center of the lens. Top to bottom and evenly in the center from left to right.

Your frames should not touch any part of your face, especially when smiling.
