How much do you charge for eye exams and what is included?
If you do not have insurance coverage for a routine eye exam, our normal fee is $155 (as of 2009). This includes both the medical examination and the refraction in this service, although they will be listed separately on your bill. The refraction is the portion of the exam in which the doctor determines the prescription you need for glasses or contact lenses. The fee does not include the cost of a contact lens fitting / check.
Will my eyes be dilated?
Your eyes will normally be dilated for a routine eye exam as this helps the doctor see the back of your eye. This is the important part of the eye where the light focuses, and visual examination can sometimes detect serious eye diseases, and this is facilitated by dilation of the eyes. The dilation drops we use typically keep your eyes dilated for 2 to 3 hours, so remember to bring your sunglasses.
How long will I be in the office for a complete eye exam?
Our general time frame for a routine eye exam is 1 to 1½ hours. What age should my child be when they have their first eye exam?
At what age can my child begin to see a non-pediatric eye doctor?
This depends on the compliance of the child along with the preferences of the eye doctor. At Horizon Eye Care, our pediatric ophthalmologists work with our other ophthalmologists to ensure your child's smooth transition when they are ready, and a lifetime of highest-quality eye care.
