Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

The question of whether you are a good LASIK candidate or not is a very important one. Our experienced LASIK surgeons are very careful in how they screen potential LASIK patients, as it may not be safe to perform it on a poor candidate.

However, if you are a good candidate, it can give you miraculous and dramatic vision improvement with a short recovery time. The first requirement is that your eyes be fully mature, which means that you need to be at least 18 years of age. You also need to have good eye health, with no conditions that would interfere with your post-surgery healing.

LASIK corrects three types of refractive error:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism

However, if you have severe myopia, your corneas may be too steep for LASIK. Your Horizon Eye Care surgeon will make this determination after examining your eyes. In general, a prescription of more than -6.00 diopters is considered severe. If your myopia is too severe for LASIK, we can recommend a variant procedure for vision improvement, such as IntraLase.

Another important feature of your corneas is their thickness. They would need to be of average thickness or thicker, since thin corneas may not have enough tissue for good, lasting LASIK results. Being part of the eye’s outer surface, the cornea must hold its shape against the pressure of the eye’s internal fluids. A certain minimum thickness gives it the strength to do that.

There are other specific features of your eyes and vision that your LASIK surgeon will consider in determining your LASIK candidacy. Please see Are You a Candidate for LASIK surgery for more details.
