Pilots/Athletes and LASIK

Pilots and athletes, who rely on their vision for their livelihood, used to fear the thought of LASIK vision correction surgery.

But now, LASIK and the state-of-the-art technology used in well-respected LASIK eye centers, have made both pilots and athletes viable candidates for LASIK vision improvement. (National sports figures like Tiger Woods are even spokespersons for LASIK.)

The fact is that LASIK and the newer LASEK procedures both offer safe alternatives to wearing eyeglasses and contacts.

Athletes do need to be aware of the need for at least three to four weeks of recovery time after LASIK. This is especially true for athletes who play in high-contact sports like football or hockey.

Pilots must abide by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s mandate of at least six weeks of recovery time after LASIK before returning to work. Some airlines increase that required recovery period to up to 12 weeks.

Of course, it’s always important for all patients, but particularly pilots and professional athletes, to take their time in finding a highly qualified and experienced LASIK specialist to perform their procedure.
