Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) offers the Tecnis® IOL (intraocular lens) as a superior choice for those who have cataract surgery. Cataracts are clouding of the eye’s lens and are treated by replacing the lens with an artificial lens.
The Tecnis IOL is multifocal, meaning that it provides clear vision both near and far and also at intermediate distances. There are other multifocal IOLs on the market too, but Tecnis is different because of the way it was designed.
Tecnis IOL Designed Using Wavefront Data Wavefront technology is used in Custom LASIK procedures to diagnose the eye before treatment. This is what makes Custom LASIK superior to the early LASIK procedures. A Wavefront diagnosis provides more detailed data on each eye’s exact contours, and using that data, your treatment is therefore more precise.
The optical engineers who designed the Tecnis IOL gathered wavefront data from a representative sample of the population. This gave them a picture of the average human cornea and its typical spherical aberrations. They then created an IOL to compensate for these aberrations.
This enables the Tecnis IOL to provide clearer night vision and better contrast sensitivity in normal lighting than is possible from other IOLs. It can also correct for astigmatism. You can read more on our Premium IOLs page.
