You may know people who have undergone LASIK or are planning on having this procedure. However, you may still have some trepidation about getting it yourself because of what you’ve heard or been told. At Horizon Eye Care, we want to educate our patients and potential patients as much as possible. Part of that education is putting to rest some of the misconceptions about LASIK.
Won’t work for high prescriptions – LASIK is able to treat nearly 95% of those who wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, no matter what the prescription is.
LASIK doesn’t correct astigmatism – Astigmatism can be treated with today’s LASIK technology. This misconception affects less than one percent of those who suffer from astigmatism.
LASIK is an extremely painful procedure – This is a common concern among patients seeking LASIK. However, a sedative in pill form is given to patients to keep them comfortable, and numbing drops are put in the eyes before surgery. Patients may feel some pressure, but they will not feel any pain.
LASIK can cause blindness – This is a safe procedure for an overwhelming number of candidates. Complications arise in less than one percent of those who undergo LASIK. This is one reason we consult with patients before deciding if they are candidates for the procedure.
Recovery takes a long time – It’s actually a phenomenally short recovery period. Most patients are able to go back to work or school the day after their LASIK surgery. However, many patients either schedule theirs for the end of the week to recover over the weekend or take the following day off. There is very little discomfort following LASIK and the follow-up exams will ensure that you are healing properly. You can continue with your normal schedule in most cases.
People can’t get LASIK if they are too old – Older LASIK patients are no more likely to run into complications than anyone else if they meet the LASIK candidacy. While LASIK is not performed on young children, there is no upper age limit
