In May, 2007 Horizon Eye Care installed a check-in kiosk in
one of our offices. It is proving to be very helpful for everyone – staff and
patients alike. You no longer need to wait for one of our check-in staff to
process your arrival personally, unless there is something we need to discuss.
The Check-In Process In just one or two minutes you can enter the following
pertinent information:
Name
Insurance carrier
Subscriber number
Date of birth
The kiosk will then verify your insurance by sending a
transaction to your insurance company. Within seconds, our check-in staff
receives a response from that company. Your check-in transaction is called a
“270” and the insurance company response is called a “271”. These terms derive
from the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA). Your
eligibility is now confirmed and there will be no doubts or questions about
your insurance coverage. We have found that this kiosk procedure has reduced
claim denial rates by 29%, which is good for both the patient and Horizon
Eye Care.
No longer do we have to scan or copy your insurance card. We
are planning to add another feature soon, which will allow you to swipe a
credit card to pay your amount due. If you are a new patient, you will also be using the kiosk,
although we ask you to fill out one or two forms. It should take no more than
three or four minutes. You can also register online which allows you to print
and complete your forms ahead of time.
If anyone should have a vision impairment which makes it difficult or
impossible to use the kiosk, our check-in staff will personally greet you and
check you in. They will be using the same software system on their computers,
the same 270 and 271 transactions.
At Horizon Eye Care, we guard your privacy carefully. Please
