Do you see walk-ins or are you appointment only?

We set aside appointments every day in order to see patients who call in and need to be seen the same day.  As a matter of fact, we maintain an urgent eye care clinic during office hours to better serve the primary care community and their patients.

Does Horizon Eye Care have an optical and contact lens department?

Yes!  We offer both an optical and contact lens department at all of our office locations.  Horizon is known for its large selection of high quality, brand name products and the terrific service provided by our highly trained opticians and contact lens technicians.  We are always stocked with the latest styles and products to best serve your needs.

Do you treat all types of medical conditions involving the eye?

Yes, we have sub-specialists who treat all types of medical conditions of the eye.  Please see our eye diseases and treatment page for a listing of some of our most commonly requested medical sub-specialties and the doctors who work in them.  If you do not see your condition listed, you can use our Online Patient Resources page to get in touch with a doctor who can help you.

What is the difference between an ophthalmologist (MD) and an optometrist (OD)?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor that specializes in ophthalmology, which is the science that deals with the structure, functions, and diseases of the eye, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of such diseases.  Thus, ophthalmologists help correct vision and/or difficulties often with medication and/or surgery.  Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who went on for additional training in residency and fellowships to specialize in the eye.  Ophthalmologists do routine eye care, but spend most of their clinical time working with patients who have a medical condition with their eye and/or need surgery.

An optometrist is a doctor that specializes in optometry and has earned a Doctor of Optometry degree.  Optometry is the science that deals with assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing the eye and related structures for visual difficulties (such as nearsightedness and farsightedness) and eye diseases.  Optometrists are critical to our community's ability to deliver routine eye care and are important partners with the ophthalmologists at Horizon Eye Care.  Horizon has 4 optometrists on staff and there are many community-based optometrists in Charlotte with whom we have mutual patients and referral relationships.

Both ophthalmologists and optometrists can prescribe medications and diagnose and treat eye diseases, but only ophthalmologists perform surgery.

Where do you have office locations?

We have 7 office locations in the Greater Charlotte area and Statesville for your convenience, you can see where they are and get directions on our Horizon Eye Care Locations page.

Where do your doctors do most of their surgery?

Our surgeons operate in several locations throughout the community.  Most of our hospital-based surgery is done at Presbyterian Hospital, either at the main or Huntersville campus.  We also operate at a freestanding surgery center on Randolph road.  We also provide cataract and retina surgery in Statesville at Iredell Memorial Hospital. While all of our cataract surgery is done at one of these facilities, we provide some surgical procedures such as eyelid surgery in the comfort of our offices.

Are there any other important policies that I need to be aware of?

Yes.  We require a 24-hour notice of appointment cancellation.  There is a $40 charge for any appointments not kept or not cancelled in this time frame.  We also have a $40 service charge if we need to bill you for your copay.

How do I request a copy of my medical records?

Please complete our medical records release form.  After you complete this form, please fax it to (704) 405-4093.  We'll process your request as soon as possible.  There is a charge for this service unless the records are being released to maintain continuity of care with another treating doctor.

If you have more questions, you can return to our main questions page, submit your eye care question and receive a prompt answer or schedule an eye care appointment at one of our seven Charlotte, North Carolina locations.
